The Surface of the Rebound,
the Direction of Money

Indices have recovered.
Has the money needed to sustain that rebound returned too?
We examine AI investment spending, Korea's buying capacity, and the destinations of global money.

01

Diverging
Recoveries

US · Korea · Japan

The clearest feature is the gap between an index rebound and actual buying capacity. As AI investment burdens emerge and energy and rate pressures build again, money takes different paths even within the same market.

The US semiconductor index steadied at +0.4% after the previous day's sharp fall. But the Dow fell −1.23%, and S&P500 closed at −0.52%. Energy gained +2.5%. A smaller semiconductor decline must be distinguished from a recovery across the whole market.

02

AI Investment's
Cash Burden

Customer spending and supplier revenue

In AI, what matters alongside the scale of investment is how that money is funded. In Q3, Meta spent more on capital expenditures and finance-lease principal payments than it generated in operating cash flow.

At the end of September, cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities were USD 82.45 billion. Negative cash flow in one quarter alone does not mean an immediate funding crisis.

KOSPI reversed an intraday fall of around 4% to close at 5,550.30. SK hynix rose +4.17%. But KOSDAQ closed at 751.69, down −1.62%, and foreign investors net-sold around KRW 1 trillion on KOSPI.

Right is net buying; left is net selling. Only foreign investors, institutions, and retail investors are shown, not the full investor table whose flows sum to 0.

The next test for institutions buying and some large caps recovering is how broadly that spreads to other stocks. At 15:30 in Seoul's FX market, USD/KRW was KRW 1,324.6, up KRW 0.4 on the previous day. The won weakened slightly that day; the recent days' won strength cannot be directly attributed to foreign stock buying.

Based on saved Korea Financial Investment Association (KOFIA) source data. The entire decline in deposits cannot be read as stock purchases or exits from the market. We must also check whether cash capacity keeps growing alongside the index rebound.

Money's Destinations,
and Time Lags

Weekly fund flows and cash-like assets

Over the week through October 21, global equity funds received net inflows of USD 28.16 billion. Bond funds also received USD 9.44bn, but high-yield bond funds within them lost USD 1.68bn. Money moved in different directions across assets.

In a separate ICI tally, US money-market fund assets rose USD 21.49bn. Institutional assets grew USD 24.01bn; retail assets fell USD 2.52bn. Changes in MMF assets and Lipper fund net flows use different sources and populations and cannot be added together.

Check the date first Weekly inflows alone do not yet justify saying money is coming in despite the sell-off. The next tally must show whether inflows persisted after the shock.
05

Renewed
Energy Pressure

Oil · Rates · Corporate costs

Oil prices jumped again on the 23rd. Reports of attacks on Saudi Arabia and an offshore spill in the UAE raised supply concerns, while the US 10-year yield returned to around 5%.

Brent · 10.23 futures settlement$116.72 Per barrel · +3.14% on the day

How cost pressures connect

Possible transmission channels · Not estimated contributions
Supply concerns Actual disruption needs separate confirmation
Oil and transport costs Burden differs by company
Profits and funding Check cost pass-through and rates

Energy costs on top of doubts about AI investment could pressure profits and funding together. This is an interpretation to examine through those connections. Attack reports alone do not confirm actual lost production volumes.

Flows Diverge
Within Countries Too

France · Japan · Indonesia

France

Rating affirmed

On the 23rd, Moody's affirmed Aa3 with a negative outlook. A pending rating decision is now a confirmed outcome. A downgrade was avoided, but the negative outlook remains.

Japan

Check breadth across stocks

The Nikkei narrowed its decline to −0.34%, but on the Prime Market, 551 stocks rose, 948 stocks fell, and 47 were flat. The index's recovery differed from recovery across stocks.

Indonesia

Money moving across assets

The central bank held its policy rate at 5.75% while raising its deposit rate to 5.00%. Its official statement says that as foreign money left equities, government bonds and central-bank securities received inflows. Saying money is entering a country does not necessarily explain its stock market.

Changes Spotted
Elsewhere

Telecom infrastructure and crypto ETFs

Reports say SpaceX is negotiating for access to around 80,000 US cell sites. In the related coverage, incumbent telecom shares fell while tower owners rose. There is no final agreement yet.

Service sellers

Incumbent telecom operators

Shared infrastructure owners

Cell-tower owners
A new customer using their facilities may generate demand.

This is a useful question for value-chain research too. We should distinguish how more competition within one industry affects service companies and shared infrastructure owners differently — including in AI data centers.

US spot crypto ETF net inflows

Net outflows of USD 635.6 million for BTC and USD 110.6 million for ETH. October 23 is only partially reported and is excluded from the chart. ETF net flows are not asset balances and are not added to stablecoin changes.

These observations offer weak evidence of a broad recovery in new money. Crypto too still requires comparing price rebounds with fund inflows separately.
